On Vörösmarty Square, the wooden stalls are packed tight against one another. Honey biscuits, cinnamon and roasted chestnuts mingle in the air, a cup of mulled wine keeps your hands busy, and Hungarian families do their holiday shopping all around you. Budapest in December sets the tone for the rest of the trip.
The tour crosses three capitals in nine days. In Prague, the tree on Old Town Square watches over the chalets and the smell of gingerbread. The last full day climbs to Hradcany, where the visit of the castle district ends in the Golden Lane, a row of small coloured houses built against the rampart.
