The MS Vivaldi leaves Vienna in the late afternoon and sails up the Danube overnight. In the morning, Budapest appears through the window, the parliament still lit on the bank. The ship docks a few minutes from Vörösmarty Square, where the stalls open while the Gerbeaud café reveals the day's window on its giant Advent calendar.
The trip begins on land, though, with three nights in Prague. One day leads to the castle, St George's Basilica and the Golden Lane; the next goes down into the old town, between the astronomical clock, the Powder Tower and the Municipal House. Cesky Krumlov, a UNESCO-listed medieval village, makes the transition to Vienna, where the first evening ends with a Strauss and Mozart concert.
Then comes the 4-night cruise: Vienna and its Ring, Budapest between Buda and Pest, Bratislava and its walled old town, each call with its own Christmas market. All meals are served on board, drinks included with meals, and the visits are led in French. The return to Vienna goes through the Hofburg and the Sisi Museum, before a last hotel night and dinner in a traditional restaurant.
