What the ship is like

One hundred and thirty-five metres long, eleven metres forty-five wide, drawing one metre sixty. That long, low profile is what defines the longship series: it is dimensioned for the locks of the Main-Danube canal, which set the limits for the whole European river fleet.

She carries one hundred and ninety guests in ninety-five staterooms, all outside, spread over three of her four decks. The crew numbers around fifty. She flies the Swiss flag, like most of Viking's European river ships, the company being registered in Basel.

The Rhine, the Main and the Danube, linked by the Main-Danube canal. This is the classic triangle of European river cruising, the one that makes Amsterdam to Basel and Nuremberg to Budapest possible.

The Erlangen accident, and why we mention it

On 11 September 2016, Viking Freya struck a railway bridge at Erlangen on the Main-Danube canal. The wheelhouse was torn away and two officers were killed. The ship was repaired and returned to service.
