Truvor, the name

According to the Primary Chronicle, three Varangian brothers were called to rule over the eastern Slavs: Rurik, Sineus and Truvor. The third received Izborsk and died two years later. Historians have argued for two centuries about whether he existed at all, which makes him a fitting name for a page about what exists and what does not.

The ship

She was Sergey Kirov, after the Bolshevik leader assassinated in 1934. Built at the Elbewerften yard in Boizenburg in September 1987, a Dmitriy Furmanov type, project 302, she carried the name Viking Kirov before becoming Viking Truvor in 2012.

One hundred and twenty-nine metres by seventeen, five decks. Sources give one hundred and four or one hundred and six cabins, and two hundred and ten or two hundred and fifty guests depending on the fit-out. We give both ranges rather than one falsely precise figure.
