Frequently Asked Questions
At the Santa Apolónia and Jardim do Tabaco terminals, which handle most calls, right below the lanes of the Alfama. It is one of the best-placed berths in Europe: the city's oldest quarter starts at the foot of the gangway.
Yes. Terreiro do Paço, the vast royal square opening onto the Tagus, is about ten minutes' walk along the quays. A metro station adjoins the Santa Apolónia terminal and taxis are plentiful. Accept the hills and cobbles from the outset, and wear the right shoes.
The Alfama and the Baixa, on foot from the ship, with a climb to São Jorge castle. Belém needs half a day on its own: it is the farthest point of a typical call, worth attempting only if your call is long.
The quarter climbing toward the castle, facing the cruise terminal, and one of the few to survive the 1755 earthquake. It keeps a village spirit: laundry at the windows, sardines on the grill, neighbours calling to each other from balcony to balcony.
The miradouros of the Alfama. Santa Luzia, with its pergola and azulejos, and then Portas do Sol, open wide over the rooftops tumbling toward the Tagus. At the very top, São Jorge castle spreads its ramparts among the pines with the whole city below.
It's worth it, provided you board early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The yellow wooden cars thread through streets barely wider than they are, but at peak hours the queues are long and the car is packed.
Yes if you have half a day. The Jerónimos Monastery raises a Manueline cloister of extraordinary delicacy, and the Belém Tower, a sentinel from 1520, guarded the harbour mouth from which the caravels sailed. Reach it by taxi or tram; allow generous time for the return.
At the Pastéis de Belém bakery, which has served its custard tart since 1837 to a recipe kept secret, still warm and dusted with cinnamon. Elsewhere in town, neighbourhood counters serve excellent ones with a strong coffee.
The euro and Portuguese. Cards are taken everywhere, including on transit and in small shops. English is widely spoken in tourism, and French turns up among older shopkeepers.
April to June and September to October: fine light, bearable heat and shorter queues than at the height of summer. In July and August, the Alfama's slopes in the middle of the day are punishing.
