Disney’s Contemporary Resort

The monorail runs through the lobby, and the park is a walk away

A train passes inside the hotel. That is the image children keep of the Contemporary: the A-frame tower, the great concourse open the full height, the Mary Blair mural some thirty metres tall, and the monorail entering on one side and leaving on the other above the tables. The architecture dates from 1971 and it has not aged the way you would expect.

The position is worth as much as the setting. Magic Kingdom Park is reached on foot, along a path of a few minutes, and by the monorail leaving from the concourse. Two independent routes to a park's main gate, with no bus: few addresses on the property offer that, and it is what makes an afternoon nap back at the hotel possible without losing an hour to it.

Five people in an ordinary room

Rooms at the Contemporary sleep five, two queen beds plus a daybed, in the tower as in the Garden Wing. With the Polynesian and the Grand Floridian, it is the third hotel in the monorail area where a family of five fits in one room. Beyond that, two-bedroom suites go to eight and even ten, and over at Bay Lake Tower, two-bedroom villas sleep nine and the three-bedroom grand villa twelve.

The theme park view is a separate category: from those rooms the fireworks are watched from the balcony. It has to be requested when booking and it goes early. Rooms facing Bay Lake cost less and look onto water rather than a parking area, a distinction worth spelling out to your advisor.

The tables, two of which the whole property is trying to book

Chef Mickey's serves a character buffet morning and evening, and it is one of the most sought-after character meals on the property: aim for the first day of the sixty-day window. California Grill occupies the top floor of the tower, with a view over Magic Kingdom Park and a table booked long in advance. Steakhouse 71 runs morning to night on the ground floor, and Contempo Cafe settles quick meals.

What a Disney property address gives you

Disney lists these benefits on its own page, and they deserve naming one by one, because most comparisons blur them together.

Early theme park entry. Thirty minutes ahead in all four parks, every day of the stay. The difference between riding two headline attractions and queueing ninety minutes for one.

Parking included. Standard parking at the theme parks, the water parks and the Disney Springs area costs nothing. Off property, it is paid every morning.

Lightning Lane seven days ahead. The general public buys them three days out. On the most sought-after attractions, four days of lead time change the shape of a trip, and it is the least known advantage of the lot.

Restaurants, the whole stay at once. Everyone books sixty days out. The difference is the block: from here you book the full length of the stay on day sixty, up to ten nights. A guest staying off property books one day at a time and arrives behind.

Disney transport. Buses, boats, monorail and the Disney Skyliner, at no charge. And MagicBand+ opens the room, enters the park and charges purchases to the folio.

Value, Moderate, Deluxe: what the words hide

Disney sorts its hotels into four families, and the gap between them is not only about luxury. A Value address gives plain rooms, a food court and buses. A Moderate adds a table-service restaurant, themed pools and more space. A Deluxe adds location — often walking distance or a monorail ride from a park — and extended evening hours. The Deluxe Villas add a kitchen and a laundry.

Everything else is identical: early entry, parking included, Lightning Lane at seven days, the dining booking block, Disney transport. A family choosing a Value does not give up the property benefits; it gives up space and distance.

Extended evening hours, the advantage that shows least and is worth most

Disney reserves extended evening theme park hours for its Disney Deluxe Resorts and Disney Deluxe Villas, on select nights. The Disney's Contemporary Resort is among them.

In practice: the park closes to the public and you stay in it. Queues collapse, photographs become possible, and attractions that wanted ninety minutes at three in the afternoon follow one another in twenty. It is the benefit that best justifies the gap with a lower category, and almost nobody sells it properly.

Getting around from the hotel

The monorail leaves the concourse for Magic Kingdom Park, and a walking path reaches that park's main gate in a few minutes. A second monorail, taken at the Transportation and Ticket Center, reaches EPCOT. Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park are reached by bus. Two pools face Bay Lake, one with a slide about five metres high and a water play area. Disney posts construction and refurbishment under way, with no published schedule.

One thing to know whatever the hotel: delivery of park purchases to the room no longer exists. The service has not returned since 2020 and Disney no longer lists it among its benefits. Many Quebec listings still advertise it. What remains: pickup at the front of the park at the end of the day, or shipping home.

Who this hotel suits

This hotel suits anyone who puts Magic Kingdom Park at the centre of the trip and wants to walk there, the family of five in a single room, and anyone travelling with young children who nap. It suits a group of nine or twelve thanks to the Bay Lake Tower villas. It suits less well anyone after a setting of wood and greenery: the architecture is concrete and glass, owned as such, and it does not please everyone.
