Other hotels on the resort

Between the Disney hotels and the hotels outside the gates, there is a third category few travellers know about: properties that Disney does not run, but that sit on Walt Disney World land. Some give almost all the benefits of a Disney hotel. Only one group gives them all.

On property, without being Disney hotels

The Walt Disney World Swan, the Walt Disney World Dolphin, the Swan Reserve and the Four Seasons Resort Orlando hold a position nothing else reproduces: they sit on Walt Disney World property, but they are run by other chains. Marriott for the first three, Four Seasons for the fourth.

That makes for a rare combination. A Disney address, Marriott or Four Seasons loyalty points, and part of the property's benefits without being a Disney hotel in the strict sense.

What they have, and where the line falls

All four appear on Disney's official list for the thirty-minute early theme park entry, at all four parks, every day. That is the benefit that matters most, and it is settled.

The line falls elsewhere, and few travel pages draw it in the right place. Extended evening hours are named for the Walt Disney World Swan, the Dolphin and the Swan Reserve on the Disney page that governs them, and the Swan and Dolphin advertises the benefit on its own site. The Four Seasons Resort Orlando is not on that list, and does not claim it among its own Disney benefits either. Three addresses out of four.

Two further Swan and Dolphin benefits deserve naming, because they weigh on the wallet and on the day. Parking at the Disney theme parks is free on presentation of the room key. And the window to buy Lightning Lane passes opens seven days before the stay, as it does for Disney hotel guests, instead of three days for everyone else.

The position, which is the real argument

The Swan, the Dolphin and the Swan Reserve line Crescent Lake, in the same sector as the Beach Club, the Yacht Club and the BoardWalk Inn. EPCOT's International Gateway is a ten-minute walk. Disney's Hollywood Studios comes by boat, by Skyliner or on foot.

Two parks without ever boarding a bus: that is the mark of this sector, and it is what you buy by staying here. Magic Kingdom Park and Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park are reached by bus.

The Four Seasons sits at Golden Oak, set apart, with its own shuttle to the parks. It plays a different card: five-star hotel service, a golf course, a private water park and a clientele that comes as much for the hotel as for the parks.

Who these addresses suit

The traveller collecting Marriott points who wants to use or earn them during a Disney stay. The couple or family putting EPCOT and Hollywood Studios at the centre of the trip. The group in town for a convention, since the Swan and the Dolphin are built for it.

They suit less well anyone whose priority is Magic Kingdom Park: it is the park that takes the most transport from this area, while the Swan, the Dolphin and the Swan Reserve reach EPCOT and Hollywood Studios on foot or by FriendShip boat. And the Four Seasons suits less well anyone set on extended evening hours, since it is the only one of the four without them.

What your advisor checks before booking

The benefits granted to these addresses have changed several times over the years, and they differ from the Swan to the Four Seasons. The detail that surprises: parking and daily fees

These addresses do not follow the Disney rules on this point. Parking and daily fees are billed the way the operating chain bills them, not the way the resort does. Ask for the all-in price rather than the room rate: that is where the gap with a Disney hotel of comparable position either widens or closes.

One reversal is worth knowing: parking at the hotel is billed, but the Swan and Dolphin gives free parking at the Disney theme parks on presentation of the room key. Two car parks, two regimes, on the same stay.
