Hotels of Good Neighbor hotels

The Good Neighbor programme is one of the few things Disney does outside its own walls. These are independent hotels, off the property, that Disney agrees to recommend because they meet quality and service standards it sets itself. The title is worth what it is worth, but it already rules out a good many unpleasant surprises.

What the Good Neighbor label guarantees, and what it does not

Disney recommends some sixty hotels around Orlando under the Good Neighbor name. The label means the property has passed an inspection and may sell park tickets. It grants nothing inside the parks. No early entry, no extended evening hours, no seven-day window to buy Lightning Lane, no parking included, no Disney transport.

The confusion is expensive, because booking engines display the words as if they were worth something. Here is the real dividing line: Disney publishes a list that names the off-property hotels entitled to 30-minute early entry. Being on it or not has nothing to do with the Good Neighbor label. Dozens of addresses carry the label without being on the list.

The off-property hotels that really do have early entry

Seven of them form the Disney Springs area, on Hotel Plaza Boulevard, within walking distance of the shops and restaurants: DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Orlando, Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando, Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace, Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista, Holiday Inn Orlando, Renaissance Orlando Resort and Spa and Wyndham Garden Lake Buena Vista.

Outside that area Disney also names the Wyndham Lake Buena Vista, Four Seasons Resort Orlando, Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek, Waldorf Astoria Orlando, Shades of Green, and the Walt Disney World Swan, Dolphin and Swan Reserve. These lists change: ours is checked against Disney's own page, and your advisor revalidates it before you book.

Half an hour's head start sounds small on paper. On a March morning, in front of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Flight of Passage, it is the difference between riding at once and waiting an hour and a half.

The three phrases that mislead most

"Minutes from Disney", "free shuttle", "breakfast included". We checked those three promises on each of the forty-five addresses in this destination, one by one, on the hotel chain's own site. They are wrong more often than not.

The shuttle. Several hotels have none at all and say so on their own page. Others charge for it. Elsewhere it is bundled into a mandatory daily fee: prepaid, not free. Some serve only two parks out of four, or skip Magic Kingdom Park precisely. Each hotel page on this site names the exact case and gives the alternative route.

The daily fees. Most of these resorts add a mandatory line to the bill that never appears in the advertised rate. It sometimes carries the shuttle, the wifi, water park access. Parking is often billed separately on top. In our checks, only two addresses had neither a facilities fee nor paid parking.

The four-occupant ceiling, and the addresses that break it

This is the corridor's most common problem and almost nobody writes it down: the standard room caps at four people. A family of five needs two rooms, or the one category that makes an exception. Bunk bed rooms and family suites do exist, they are few, and they have to be requested explicitly when booking. The hotel pages concerned name them.

How to choose, in three questions

Does early entry matter to you? If it does, Disney's named list cuts the field to about fifteen addresses and your decision is half made. If it does not, the whole corridor opens up and price becomes the first criterion.

Are you driving down? Then the shuttle matters less than the parking, and the gap in fees between two neighbouring hotels can exceed the gap in rate.

Are there more than four of you? Settle that before anything else: it changes the budget more than any other choice.

In most cases, yes. Transport to the parks exists, but it runs on a fixed schedule and fees may apply, which is nothing like the Disney buses that come every fifteen or twenty minutes and cost nothing. With a car you gain the freedom to go to Universal, the Kennedy Space Center or the beach, which is often the very reason for staying off property. Remember to add daily parking at the Disney parks to your calculation.
It varies threefold depending on the area, and it is the thing to watch. A hotel in Lake Buena Vista, right by the gates, is about ten minutes by car from the park lots. A hotel on International Drive runs about twenty. A hotel in Kissimmee, out on Highway 192, can take thirty-five in the morning traffic, and more coming back late at night. Multiply by two and by the number of days: the gap becomes half a holiday.
