The Value category is the entry level of the Disney hotels, and it is also the one that owns its choices most openly: oversized props, colours that shout, and children who recognise everything before the bags are even down. The rooms are smaller than elsewhere, but you are inside Disney from the first morning to the last.

Six addresses, one principle: paying to sleep on Disney property

The Value category takes in Disney's Pop Century Resort, Disney's Art of Animation Resort, the three Disney's All-Star resorts — Music, Movies and Sports — and the campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort. It is the entry door to the property, and it carries exactly the same Disney benefits as the categories above it.

Thirty-minute early entry to all four parks, every day. Parking included at the theme parks, the water parks and Disney Springs. Disney transport at no charge. Dining booked sixty days out for the whole stay at once, up to ten nights. Lightning Lane seven days ahead instead of three. A family choosing the Value category gives up none of these. It gives up space and distance.

What you actually give up

A Value room is a room: two queen beds, or a queen and a pull-down, one bathroom, no living area and no balcony. Meals happen at a self-service food court; none of these addresses has a table-service restaurant. Transport runs by bus, except at Pop Century and Art of Animation which have the Skyliner. And the props are giant, loud and colourful: that is deliberate, and it does not please everyone.

In return, the entry price opens the door to everything else. For a family that spends its days in the parks and comes back for the pool and for bed, the difference from a Deluxe room is measured in hours spent in the room, which is to say in almost nothing.

The question that decides: how many people

This is where the Value category splits in two, and almost no listing says so.

Four people or fewer. All five resorts work. The choice comes down to theme and transport. Pop Century and Art of Animation have the Skyliner to EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios; the three All-Star resorts depend entirely on buses.

Five people or more. The field narrows at once. Disney's All-Star Music is the only one of the three All-Star resorts with family suites, sleeping six with two bathrooms and a kitchenette. Disney's Art of Animation has suites for six in three of its four wings. All-Star Movies, All-Star Sports and Pop Century all cap at four occupants per room. And the Fort Wilderness campsites take eight, whichever site type you book.

The Skyliner, and why it changes a day

Pop Century and Art of Animation share a gondola station running to EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios with no bus involved. They are the only two Value resorts on the property that have it. For two parks out of four, it replaces a bus queue with a cabin arriving every minute. Magic Kingdom Park and Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park are still reached by bus, and the Skyliner stops in high wind or lightning.

Choosing among the three All-Star resorts

They resemble each other closely enough to be nearly interchangeable: same category, same rooms, same food court, same buses, neighbouring grounds. Two things separate them. The theme — sports, films or music — and the number of beds, since only Music has family suites. Movies also carries a construction notice published by Disney, with no schedule: have it checked for your dates.

Camping, the category people forget

The Fort Wilderness campsites sit in the same price tier and work entirely differently. Five site types, all for a maximum of eight occupants, in pine woods on the shore of Bay Lake. Dogs are allowed, which no other address in the category offers. A boat crosses to Magic Kingdom Park. For an extended family driving down from Quebec in a motorhome, or two families travelling together, it is the widest option in the tier.
