Key West before the crowds

Old Key West takes up the island as people picture it before mass tourism: two-storey pastel wooden houses, railed verandas, palms, canals, a golf course running along the grounds. No giant props, no queue in the lobby, little noise. It is the first Disney Vacation Club resort, opened in 1991, and the age shows less in the wear than in the dimensions.

The proof is in the beds. The studio sleeps four with two real queen beds, where the newer studios in the network offer one queen and a pull-down. The three-bedroom grand villa sleeps twelve with a king, two queens and two double beds, fixed beds rather than makeshift ones. For an extended family or two households travelling together, the difference registers by the third morning.

The pools and the rest of the grounds

The main pool, at Hospitality House, holds about 560,000 litres, with a slide coming out of a sandcastle, a dry sauna at the foot of a lighthouse, a whirlpool spa, a sand beach and a kiddie pool. Three quiet pools are spread through the Old Turtle Pond, South Point and Miller's Road sections. The R.E.S.T. complex adds a fitness centre open around the clock, a sauna and tennis courts.

Olivia's Cafe serves home-style American cooking with a Caribbean turn, and it is the resort's only table-service restaurant. The rest of the meals are made in the unit, which fits the nature of the address: people settle in here for a week or two rather than three nights.

What a Disney Vacation Club villa changes

A villa is not a larger hotel room. It is a home. Studios add a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. One-bedroom villas and larger add a full kitchen with range, dishwasher and dishes, plus a washer and dryer inside the unit. For a family coming down from Quebec for ten days, that means breakfast at the table rather than in a queue, and one suitcase less.

Two things deserve spelling out before booking. Housekeeping first: in a Disney Vacation Club villa it is not done daily as in a hotel room, and the arrangement depends on the type of booking and the length of stay. Have your advisor confirm it. Then availability: these units go first to club members, and the nights offered for cash come out sparingly. Booking early is worth more here than anywhere else on the property.

What a Disney property address gives you

Disney lists these benefits on its own page, and they deserve naming one by one, because most comparisons blur them together.

Early theme park entry. Thirty minutes ahead in all four parks, every day of the stay. The difference between riding two headline attractions and queueing ninety minutes for one.

Parking included. Standard parking at the theme parks, the water parks and the Disney Springs area costs nothing. Off property, it is paid every morning.

Lightning Lane seven days ahead. The general public buys them three days out. On the most sought-after attractions, four days of lead time change the shape of a trip, and it is the least known advantage of the lot.

Restaurants, the whole stay at once. Everyone books sixty days out. The difference is the block: from here you book the full length of the stay on day sixty, up to ten nights. A guest staying off property books one day at a time and arrives behind.

Disney transport. Buses, boats, monorail and the Disney Skyliner, at no charge. And MagicBand+ opens the room, enters the park and charges purchases to the folio.

Extended evening hours, the advantage that shows least and is worth most

Disney reserves extended evening theme park hours for its Disney Deluxe Resorts and Disney Deluxe Villas, on select nights. The Disney's Old Key West Resort is among them.

In practice: the park closes to the public and you stay in it. Queues collapse, photographs become possible, and attractions that wanted ninety minutes at three in the afternoon follow one another in twenty. It is the benefit that best justifies the gap with a lower category, and almost nobody sells it properly.

Getting around from the hotel

A boat runs down to Disney Springs from the resort dock. The four theme parks and the water parks are reached by bus. The grounds are spread out, cut into sections along the canals, with several internal stops: the morning trip starts with a tour of the resort. Ask for a building close to Hospitality House if that matters to you. Disney posts refurbishment under way, with no published schedule.

One thing to know whatever the hotel: delivery of park purchases to the room no longer exists. The service has not returned since 2020 and Disney no longer lists it among its benefits. Many Quebec listings still advertise it. What remains: pickup at the front of the park at the end of the day, or shipping home.

Who this hotel suits

This resort suits long stays, extended families of nine or twelve, and anyone who would rather cook and do laundry than eat out three times a day. It suits anyone after quiet and a setting that does not shout. It suits less well anyone coming for four days to run through the parks: everything here is reached by bus, and the resort is far from everything except Disney Springs.
