The Campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort

Camping on Disney property, eight to a site

Fort Wilderness takes up a wide stretch of pine woods on the shore of Bay Lake. The loops smell of resin, a deer crosses now and then at first light, and the whistle of a boat leaving for Magic Kingdom Park stands in for the noise of buses. The campsites form a village of their own inside it, with their own trading posts, their evening campfires and their internal bus routes.

Five site types can be booked, all of them for a maximum of eight occupants. The simplest takes up to two tents or a pop-up camper on a pad of roughly 3 m by 7.6 m (10 ft by 25), with electricity and wifi. Full hook-up sites add sewer and stretch the pad to about 15 m (50 ft). The Preferred site, close to the marina, runs about 13.7 m (45 ft). Premium and Premium Meadow offer the largest pads on the property, about 5.5 m by 18 m (18 ft by 60), enough for a sizeable motorhome.

Eight occupants per site, where Disney hotel rooms cap at four or five and family suites at six. Disney Vacation Club grand villas go further, in an altogether different category. For an extended family driving down from Quebec in a motorhome, or two families travelling together, the gap is decisive and it gets calculated before anything else.

Dogs are welcome, on a handheld leash of 2.4 m or less, and there is an off-leash dog park on site. Cats are allowed inside a motorhome only. Pets are not permitted in tents or pop-up campers. These rules belong to the campground, and they settle or block a good many road trips.

What you do here, and nowhere else on the property

Two pools: the Meadow, with its corkscrew slide, whirlpool spa and water play area, and the Wilderness, quieter. Around them, archery, horseback riding, canoeing, wooded trails and four-seat golf cart rentals, which quickly become the family's way of getting around inside the site. In the evening, campfires and outdoor films keep the children busy while the parents catch their breath.

What a Disney property address gives you

Disney lists these benefits on its own page, and they deserve naming one by one, because most comparisons blur them together.

Early theme park entry. Thirty minutes ahead in all four parks, every day of the stay. The difference between riding two headline attractions and queueing ninety minutes for one.

Parking included. Standard parking at the theme parks, the water parks and the Disney Springs area costs nothing. Off property, it is paid every morning.

Lightning Lane seven days ahead. The general public buys them three days out. On the most sought-after attractions, four days of lead time change the shape of a trip, and it is the least known advantage of the lot.

Restaurants, the whole stay at once. Everyone books sixty days out. The difference is the block: from here you book the full length of the stay on day sixty, up to ten nights. A guest staying off property books one day at a time and arrives behind.

Disney transport. Buses, boats, monorail and the Disney Skyliner, at no charge. And MagicBand+ opens the room, enters the park and charges purchases to the folio.

Value, Moderate, Deluxe: what the words hide

Disney sorts its hotels into four families, and the gap between them is not only about luxury. A Value address gives plain rooms, a food court and buses. A Moderate adds a table-service restaurant, themed pools and more space. A Deluxe adds location — often walking distance or a monorail ride from a park — and extended evening hours. The Deluxe Villas add a kitchen and a laundry.

Everything else is identical: early entry, parking included, Lightning Lane at seven days, the dining booking block, Disney transport. A family choosing a Value does not give up the property benefits; it gives up space and distance.

Extended evening hours: what this category does not get

Disney reserves extended evening theme park hours for its Disney Deluxe Resorts and Disney Deluxe Villas, on select nights. The The Campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort is not among them.

Getting around from the hotel

A boat links Fort Wilderness to Magic Kingdom Park, a crossing of Bay Lake worth the trip in itself. The other parks, the water parks and Disney Springs are reached by bus. The site is large: getting from a campsite to the trading posts or the docks happens by internal bus, on foot or by golf cart, and the carts book up early. Disney also posts that the resort is undergoing refurbishment, with no published schedule: have what is affected confirmed for your dates.

One thing to know whatever the hotel: delivery of park purchases to the room no longer exists. The service has not returned since 2020 and Disney no longer lists it among its benefits. Many Quebec listings still advertise it. What remains: pickup at the front of the park at the end of the day, or shipping home.

Who this hotel suits

This site suits the traveller coming down in a motorhome or a pop-up camper, the extended family of seven or eight, and anyone who wants to keep the dog along. It suits the person who likes sleeping in the woods and taking a boat in the morning rather than a bus. A traveller who wants the bed made, a restaurant two minutes away and air conditioning will do better in the property's hotels: here the comfort gets set up and taken down by hand, and the trip to the services counts in the day.
