DECAMERON AQUARIUM

Decameron Aquarium has been closed since 25 September 2025, and nothing points to a reopening soon.

The chain closed it of its own accord, three days after receiving an engineering study on the building's structure. Nothing happened to anyone. This was a precautionary decision, taken by an operator who preferred to lose a season rather than take a chance with its guests. Decameron rehoused the travellers on the island and refunded the bookings.

San Andrés itself is not closing. Five other Decameron properties and one Grand Sirenis are open to travellers, and an advisor will tell you which one suits your trip at 1 866 628-6241. Here is what to know before you choose.

Where to stay on San Andrés right now

The island has six open addresses, all all-inclusive, each with its own personality.

Decameron Maryland and Decameron Boutique Los Delfines come closest to the spirit of the Aquarium, on the water, with free Wi-Fi right into the rooms. Decameron San Luis sits further south on San Luis bay, away from the bustle of the centre.

Decameron Marazul looks out over the north coast from its cliff. Note that its Wi-Fi costs extra and covers the lobby, the auditorium and the pool only: better to plan for that before you leave than to find out on arrival.

Decameron Isleño is the most central, steps from Avenida Colombia, with free Wi-Fi in the common areas.

Grand Sirenis San Andres is the newest, and the only one we recommend without reservation to a traveller using a wheelchair: four adapted rooms, all public areas accessible, published lift dimensions. Its spa, gym and several themed restaurants are not yet in service, and your advisor will confirm what is open for your dates.

The Inter Hotel programme, which changes everything on San Andrés

Here is the piece of information worth real money, and the one comparison sites almost always get wrong.

Four Decameron properties on the island give access to the facilities, bars, shows and restaurants of the other three: Los Delfines, Marazul, Maryland and San Luis. One lunch or dinner is included by reservation, with drinks and snacks, and facility use runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Isleño is explicitly excluded from the programme. Breakfast is not part of the arrangement, transport between hotels is at your expense, and groups are not admitted. You will see the offer described as "5 for 1": the current official version counts four, since the Aquarium is closed.

What the engineering study found

Decameron published the reason for the closure in plain terms: anomalies in the structure of the installations that could eventually compromise the physical stability of the hotel. The study arrived on 22 September 2025 and the hotel closed on the 25th.

A year on, no return date has been announced and the property has disappeared from the chain's own navigation. That is the clearest signal that nothing is coming in the short term.

San Andrés is still the sea of seven colours

The island floats above the Seaflower, a UNESCO biosphere reserve and one of the largest marine protected areas in the Caribbean. That is where the sea gets its habit of changing shade every hundred metres, from pale turquoise to deep blue.

Johnny Cay takes twenty minutes to cross on foot and is reached by lancha from the centre. El Acuario and Haynes Cay form a sandbank where the water comes to your waist and rays pass between your legs. La Piscinita and the Hoyo Soplador hold the southern tip, and the loop around the island by golf cart takes half a day, stopping wherever you please.

What an advisor checks before you go

Some resellers still list the Aquarium as available. A booking made elsewhere on a closed hotel ends in a cancellation, sometimes late, sometimes after payment.
