Couples-only: the exact rule

The nuance deserves precision, because it differs from most so-called adults-only addresses. COCOS welcomes two adults travelling together, whatever their relationship: partners, friends, a mother and daughter. The minimum age is eighteen.

Single and triple occupancy, on the other hand, are not permitted. A solo traveller therefore cannot stay, and a third adult cannot be added to a cottage. On the ridge, between two beaches

The property occupies high ground between Valley Church Beach and Jolly Beach, two of the finest beaches on the west coast and two of the least crowded. You walk down to them, and you walk back up.

Here is what to know before booking: the terrain is genuinely steep, and the resort says so itself. Reaching some cottages means a real climb. Only one, the Beachfront Pool Cottage, sits directly on the sand. For a fit couple the walk is part of the charm; for anyone with reduced mobility the address does not work, and our advisors will say so plainly.

Which cottage to choose

Six categories split into two families. First the cottages without a plunge pool, from Standard View to Premium View to Sunset View, all on the hillside, with the view as the main difference.

Then the cottages with a private plunge pool: the Sunset Pool Cottage, the Bay View Pool Cottage and the Beachfront Pool Cottage, the last the only one set on the sand. Every cottage has a four-poster bed, a private balcony, an outdoor shower, air conditioning and a small fridge. None has a television.

Where you eat on site

One restaurant only, open-air, on several levels, served à la carte rather than buffet. That is few, and honesty requires saying so up front: a traveller who judges a stay by its number of tables will be disappointed.

Those who stay find something else. À la carte service, in a property of this size, gives a quality and an attention no buffet provides. Private dinners can be booked on the beach as an extra. One or two bars and a poolside counter round things out.

Valley Church and Jolly Beach rank among Antigua's finest beaches and among its quietest, with fine white sand and calm water facing the sunset. They are public, like almost every beach on the island, but they do not draw crowds.

A freshwater pool serves the property, open from half past seven to half past six, alongside the private plunge pools of three cottage categories. The Serenity Cottage spa handles massages during the day. No casino.

Who this resort suits

It fits couples who want absolute quiet, two fine beaches and a room without a screen. It fits fit travellers, ready to climb and descend a slope several times a day. It fits people returning to the Caribbean who want something other than a large resort.

What to know before you book

The resort states about forty-five minutes by road from V.C. Bird International Airport, over some sixteen kilometres. A taxi runs around thirty US dollars for a couple, a private transfer about seventy-five dollars each way.

Antigua lies inside the hurricane belt, whose season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with a peak in August and September. The East Caribbean dollar is the official currency, though US dollars circulate everywhere, and driving is on the left.
