Ninety-eight rooms and suites, two floors at most, no elevator, and 1.2 kilometres of beach facing due west. The formula reads as a classic beach hotel rather than a resort: low buildings buried in mature vegetation, a single pool, and sand that starts where the terrace ends.

Behind the property stretches a lagoon designated a bird sanctuary, which changes the feel of a stay: herons, egrets and terns are part of the morning scenery. The resort earns 4.7 out of 5 across nearly 4 800 TripAdvisor reviews, the best score of any Elite Island property on Antigua by a wide margin.

Sixteen and over: what that changes

The minimum age is sixteen, and the resort applies it without exception. No kids' club, no waterslide, no loud entertainment.

The rule draws a particular clientele: many European couples, often on long stays of ten or fourteen nights, with a high rate of return. The beach and the sunset

Galley Bay sits on the island's west side, which means the sun goes down straight ahead. On an island where many resorts occupy the north or east coast, that orientation is worth a great deal: every evening, almost without exception, the show arrives from the beach.

The sand is fine and white over 1.2 kilometres, and the beach stays uncrowded. The sea is a little livelier than in the enclosed bays of the north coast, which pleases some swimmers and not others: better to know before you go.

Which room to choose

Five categories make up the inventory, all beachfront. Deluxe Beachfront rooms, around thirty-two to thirty-seven square metres, form the entry level. Superior Deluxe Beachfront rooms rise to forty-three.

The Gauguin suites, the signature category, are round thatched cottages arranged in pairs around a private plunge pool, between forty-two and fifty-five square metres. The Premium Beachfront Suites, rebuilt in 2024, reach fifty-three square metres with a sunken living area and a bathroom with two showers. A Premium Beachfront Spa Suite completes the range.

Where you eat on site

Five venues share the property. Sea Grape is the main restaurant, à la carte, in Caribbean and international cooking. Gauguin serves the grill at the water's edge. Barefoot Grill handles casual meals on the sand, and the Upcycle Cafe the coffee and snacks.

The fifth, Ismay's, is the house's fine-dining room, and it bears saying plainly: it is not covered by the all-inclusive and carries a supplement of around fifty US dollars. Five bars round things out, among them the TeePee Bar and the Rum Shack.

Is it an all-inclusive?

Yes, with the exception of Ismay's. The plan covers meals in the other four restaurants, drinks, activities and non-motorised water sports.

The pool, the spa and the activities

A single outdoor pool, with a waterfall, serves the property. Worth stating plainly because some websites claim several: they are counting the private plunge pools of the Gauguin suites, which serve their occupants alone.

The Indulge Spa operates as a paid extra. Non-motorised water sports are included, along with the daily activities. Private beach dinners are booked separately. No casino on site.

Who this resort suits

It fits couples who want a long sunset-facing beach, a property on a human scale and consistent service, the best on Antigua among all-inclusives in its range. It fits long stays, where quiet eventually counts for more than variety. It fits birdwatchers, with the sanctuary behind.

Families with young children cannot stay. Anyone wanting several pools, a casino, a kids' club or sustained entertainment will be better served elsewhere. The absence of an elevator is also worth flagging for anyone who struggles with stairs.

What to know before you book

The resort states twenty minutes by road from V.C. Bird International Airport, which makes it one of the best-placed addresses on the west coast. Antigua lies inside the hurricane belt, whose season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with a peak in August and September.

The East Caribbean dollar is the official currency, though US dollars circulate everywhere, and driving is on the left. The Premium Beachfront Suites were rebuilt in 2024. For entry requirements, consult travel.gc.ca before departure.
