This is what sets Carlisle Bay apart from almost everything sold on Antigua. The resort offers three plans: room only, bed and breakfast, or all-inclusive. Most resorts on the island impose the full package with no alternative.

That flexibility has concrete value. A traveller planning to explore the island, English Harbour, Shirley Heights and the south-coast tables gains nothing by paying for a package they will half use. Which suite to choose

Garden Suites, the most affordable, take up to three people. Ocean Suites, also up to three, are reserved for guests aged twelve and over. Beach Suites, in balcony or terrace versions, take up to four and sit closest to the sand.

Above them, Carlisle Suites have three bedrooms and sleep six, making them one of the few options on Antigua for an extended family without renting a villa. Bay Suites, six units reserved for couples, come with butler service. The Garden, Ocean and Bay Suites have been recently refurbished.

Where you eat on site

Four restaurants, each with its own register. Indigo on the Beach serves Mediterranean and Caribbean cooking all day. East works only in the evening, in Asian cuisine. Ottimo! handles Italian at lunch and dinner. The Jetty Grill, on the dock, serves seafood at lunch and is adults-only.

Four bars fill things out: the Indigo Bar, the Jetty Bar, Coconut Grove and the Pavilion Bar. The south coast also holds a few good tables, and the resort arranges the transport.

Travelling with children

This is where the address surprises. Few hotels of this calibre take the very young seriously, and Carlisle Bay does it across four tiers: a crèche from six months, a beginners' group for two- to three-year-olds, the Cool Kids Club for four to seven, and the Crew Blue Club for eight to twelve. Sessions run nine to twelve, then one to four.

Childcare for under-twos is charged hourly; from age two it is included. The forty-five-seat screening room, fitted with blue leather chairs, shows a children's film each afternoon and an adult film in the evening. A child-free couple and a three-generation family can therefore stay in the same place without getting in each other's way.

The pool, the spa and the activities

One pool only, but large and free-form, facing the bay. The Cara Organic Beauty Spa has six treatment rooms including one for couples, a sauna, plunge pools and a hair salon.

The estate has tennis courts, some of which have been converted to pickleball: the exact count varies between the resort's own documents, and an advisor will confirm it if tennis matters to you. Add a yoga pavilion, a watersports centre, a library and charters of the house's private eleven-metre FJORD yacht.

Who this resort suits

It fits travellers who want the isolation and quiet of a bay with no neighbours, in refined surroundings without ostentation. It fits families with very young children particularly well, since a crèche from six months is unavailable anywhere else on the island at this level. It fits couples who would rather choose their plan than have one imposed.

Anyone wanting activity, a casino, shows and walkable restaurants will be better served on the north-west coast. Carlisle Bay's isolation is a choice, and it does not suit everyone. Our advisors will say so plainly.

What to know before you book

The resort sits about twenty-one kilometres from V.C. Bird International Airport, on the opposite coast. Sources give between thirty and forty-five minutes by road depending on traffic through St. John's; allow the upper end.

Antigua lies inside the hurricane belt, whose season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with a peak in August and September. The East Caribbean dollar is the official currency, though US dollars circulate everywhere, and driving is on the left. English Harbour and Shirley Heights, the island's most visited historic sites, are about twenty minutes away. For entry requirements, consult travel.gc.ca before departure.
