Wellness: what sets the address apart

Yoga and Pilates run daily, at no charge, in pavilions and on a deck facing the sea. An air-conditioned studio takes over when the sun grows too strong. Sound-healing meditation and prenatal massage are also on the programme.

Spa del Sol occupies five private thatched cabanas planted on the sand, Balinese in inspiration. Being massaged with waves three metres away is a different experience from a windowless room. An herb garden supplies the kitchens, and a beach tennis court rounds out the facilities.

Eagle Beach: the widest on the island

Eagle Beach regularly tops world rankings, and the stretch in front of Manchebo is the widest of all. The sand is fine and white, the water calm, the buildings low rather than towers, and the divi-divi trees bent by the trade winds give the coast its recognisable outline.

The difference from Palm Beach registers within the first hour. Here nobody fights over a lounger at seven in the morning, you hear the wind rather than the music, and you can walk a long way on the sand without meeting a vendor. Which room to choose

Four categories make up the inventory: Deluxe Garden View, Deluxe Ocean View, Deluxe Ocean Front and the Deluxe One Bedroom Suite. The gap between the first two is measured on waking rather than in comfort: the rooms are comparable, the orientation changes everything.

Ocean-front categories face the water squarely, sunset included. The one-bedroom suite separates the living area from the sleeping area, useful for a family or a longer stay. With only 72 units and a clientele that returns, the best categories go months ahead in high season.

Where you eat on site

Four venues, and real culinary ambition for a hotel this size. Ike's Bistro works Mediterranean and Caribbean cooking at breakfast and dinner, with one of the most serious vegan and vegetarian programmes on the island. The Chophouse at Manchebo handles the grill in a more formal setting and houses the Omakase Japanese sushi counter.

Pega Pega Café and Beach Bar occupies the sand for lunches and late-afternoon cocktails. A Puro Coffee counter fills the gaps. The hotel's herb garden supplies part of the kitchens, and it shows on the plate.

Is it an all-inclusive?

It is optional, and that is worth understanding before booking. The resort sells room-only rates, rates with breakfast, and a full all-inclusive plan. The last of these covers Ike's Bistro, The Chophouse, Omakase and Pega Pega, with a premium open bar, some top-shelf spirits carrying a surcharge.

Travelling as a family or a couple

The resort is not adults-only, contrary to what you sometimes read, because of confusion with its immediate neighbour. Children are welcome. The atmosphere nonetheless stays quiet and oriented toward couples, honeymoons and travellers who came for rest.

One pool, no kids' club, no slide: families with young children looking for entertainment will find better elsewhere. Those who want an exceptional beach, quiet and good food will do very well here.

Who this resort suits

It fits couples and solo travellers after the best stretch of Eagle Beach, yoga every morning and a kitchen worth the trip. It fits anyone eating vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free, rarely so well served in the Caribbean. It fits travellers who care about environmental practice, since the Green Globe certification and the solar programme are verifiable.

What to know before you book

Allow about fifteen minutes by road between Queen Beatrix International Airport and Eagle Beach. Aruba lies outside the hurricane belt and the trade winds blow year-round: they hold the humidity down, keep seaweed away from this coast and mask how strong the sun is, so sunscreen goes on more often than you would think.
