Why choose Coco Reef
Because you are on the south shore facing the Atlantic, in a hotel small enough that the staff know you by day two.
Coco Reef holds 64 rooms over two floors across four buildings, built in 1990 in a Beaux Arts style that wears its era openly. Every room looks at the ocean. There is no tower, no crowd at the buffet, no queue at the desk. For a good many travellers, that is exactly what they were after without having a word for it.
Guests rate it 8.4 out of 10 across more than a thousand verified reviews, and the two highest scores are cleanliness and staff. That tells you where the strengths of the house are.
The beach: what you actually get
The hotel has its own cove, directly in front of the rooms. A few steps down, reserved for guests, and quiet even in high season.
Be clear about what it is: a small cove with rocky sections, prettier to look at than vast. Entering the water takes a little care in places. Water shoes settle the matter in ten seconds.
And here is the argument competing listings leave out: Elbow Beach, one of Bermuda's great stretches of pink sand, is a few minutes away on foot. So you have both, the private cove for peace and the wide public beach for the postcard, without ever boarding a bus.
Getting to Bermuda from Canada
A non-stop flight links Montreal to Bermuda, with a few departures a week in season. The window is narrow, and outside those departures you connect, usually through Toronto or the US east coast.

Allow roughly half an hour by road between the airport and Paget. The hotel runs no airport shuttle: a taxi is the normal answer, and your advisor can arrange it in advance.
When to go, and what the sea is really like
Bermuda lies in the North Atlantic, roughly a thousand kilometres off the coast of North Carolina. The Gulf Stream softens the climate without making it tropical.
From June through October the sea is genuinely pleasant, peaking near 27 degrees in August. That is swimming season, and it is when the south shore comes into its own.
From November through March, days run around 20 to 22 degrees and the sea drops to 19 or 20. Swimming turns bracing, but the island is beautiful and empty, rates are gentler, and it is the best stretch of the year for walking, golf and sightseeing without the heat. Plenty of our clients discover Bermuda this way and come back in summer.
April and May are the driest months of the year. For sunshine without heavy heat, that is the window to aim for. Hurricane season runs June to November, peaking August to October, and cancellation coverage earns its keep then.
Which room to choose
Every room at Coco Reef faces the ocean, which simplifies the choice considerably. The real question is the floor and the access.
The buildings have two storeys and there is no elevator. If stairs are a concern, ask specifically for a ground floor room when booking and have it confirmed on your file. That is the kind of detail an advisor gets written down and a booking site ignores.
Minimum check-in age is 21.
Eating and drinking on site
Sol i Mar is the main restaurant, Spanish in inspiration with Bermudian accents, serving all three meals. Sea Escape Beach Bar and Grill is the relaxed counter by the water, open through the day and seasonally. The Atrium Bar and Lounge and Tamara's Terrace round things out for drinks and evenings.
Meals are not automatically included in the room rate. Some packages add them, others do not, and it is among the first things to pin down before booking.
One advisor's note: in Paget you are within walking distance or a short taxi of several good tables, and ten minutes from Hamilton. Unlike an isolated resort, you are not captive to the hotel kitchen. That is a real advantage, and it is worth using at least two evenings.
The pool, the tennis and the rest
An outdoor pool with loungers and umbrellas, two outdoor tennis courts, gardens and terraces. The property is smoke-free.
Coco Reef makes no claim to be a full-service resort. There is no spa and no fitness centre on site. What you get instead is a well-kept, human-sized seaside address with staff you end up calling by their first names.
The south shore, and why the sand is pink
Choosing Coco Reef means first choosing the south shore. This is the coastline that built Bermuda's reputation, and it unrolls for kilometres from your door.
The pink sand, explained
The pink comes from a microscopic organism, the red foram, which lives clinging beneath the reef rocks and builds itself a small red skeleton. When it dies, the fragments mix into the white limestone sand and tint it. Parrotfish speed the process along: scraping algae off the reef, they grind up those skeletons and release them with the sediment.
A word of honesty about the colour: it is a delicate tint, not candy pink. It shows best in the low light of early morning and late afternoon, and on wet sand at the water's edge. The vividly pink photographs in circulation are edited. The real thing is subtler, and frankly better.
The walk worth the trip
The coastal path through South Shore Park links the beaches one to the next, from Elbow Beach to Warwick Long Bay and on to Horseshoe Bay. You walk the low cliff among cedars and limestone formations, the Atlantic on your right and empty coves below.
It costs nothing, it is done in sandals, and most visitors come home saying it was the best memory of the trip. Start early: the sun is strong on that coast by mid-morning.
Getting around without a car
Visitors cannot rent cars in Bermuda. It is a long-standing government rule, made to protect the character of the island and its narrow roads.
What remains: public buses, pink on main routes and blue on local lines, ferries between Hamilton, the Dockyard and St. George's, metered taxis at regulated rates, 50cc scooters requiring no motorcycle licence, electric minicars restricted to drivers 25 and over, and bicycles. Multi-day passes cover buses and ferries together.
On this point Coco Reef is among the best placed in the archipelago. Paget borders Hamilton, the south shore bus route runs close by, and the ferry is caught in town. You can spend a full week exploring without ever getting on a scooter.
What is nearby
Hamilton is ten minutes away: the shops of Front Street, the terraces on the harbour, the cathedral and the market. It is the only real town in the archipelago and it is walked on foot.
The south shore strings beaches together for kilometres, from Elbow Beach to Warwick Long Bay and on to Horseshoe Bay. The coastal path through South Shore Park links them, and that walk is one of the finest things Bermuda has to offer.
The Botanical Gardens and the Verdmont house museum are in the area, and St. George's, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, makes a day trip to the far end of the island.
Who it suits
Coco Reef is built for the couple who want the sea in front of the room without the machinery of a large resort, for the traveller who plans to go out and explore rather than hold down a lounger, and for anyone wanting a seaside base close to Hamilton.
If what you picture is a large resort with spa, gym and activities, or a contemporary luxury address, say so to your advisor. What to know before you book
The decor in some rooms shows its age, and the hotel's style is unapologetically 1990s. Wi-Fi is provided but not always quick. There is no elevator, no spa and no airport shuttle.
None of that prevents an excellent stay, which is exactly why we set it down plainly. Coco Reef does very well what it promises: a small, clean, well-placed address with ocean views from everywhere and staff who look after you. Guests who know what they are buying give it strong marks year after year.
