British Colonial Nassau

First thing to correct, because most booking systems still carry the old name: this hotel is no longer a Hilton. The affiliation ended in early 2022. The building closed, was rebuilt from the inside out, and reopened in February 2024 as British Colonial Nassau, independent.

The address is number 1 Bay Street, meaning the head of downtown, a few minutes' walk from the cruise pier. You get a private beach on the harbour, seven food and drink outlets, and an interior that leans hard into the 1920s: dark woods, geometric tile, ceiling fans. It is a city hotel with a beach rather than a beach resort.

What changed, and why it matters

The hotel closed in early 2022, parted ways with Hilton, absorbed a fifty-million renovation and reopened softly in December 2023, then officially in February 2024. Seven food and drink outlets were created from scratch. In March 2026, the Caribbean press confirmed a fully renovated property in operation.

In practice, if a document, brochure or booking engine still says « British Colonial Hilton », it is out of date. Hilton loyalty no longer applies. The hotel belongs to the Teneo representation network, which is a sales channel rather than an operating chain.

A harbour beach, not an ocean beach

The white sand beach is private and shared with the neighbouring Margaritaville. It faces Nassau Harbour, which produces two opposite effects worth weighing honestly.

On the good side: the water is flat, waveless, sheltered. For easy swimming or letting a child paddle, it is excellent. On the other: your horizon is port traffic and the white hulls of cruise ships, not the blue line of the Atlantic. Anyone after the postcard beach should look to Cable Beach instead, at Goldwynn or the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, about fifteen minutes away by road.

A free-form freshwater pool completes the picture, with a lifeguard. It closes in late afternoon, which surprises travellers used to southern resorts where the water stays open until dark.

Seven addresses under one roof

The Mahogany Club holds the fine dining slot. Sakana lines up noodles and sushi. The Red Pearl Grille handles the beachside grill. Woodes Rogers Tavern plays tavern and martinis, while the Fort Nassau Cigar Lounge owns rum and cigars. Breakfast is buffet at the Tamarind Marketplace, and morning coffee at the British Colonial Trading Company.

None of it is included in the rate: the hotel runs on the European plan. That makes sense downtown, where Bay Street, the straw market and the district's restaurants are within walking distance. A client who wants the wristband formula should look at Nassau all-inclusive.

What to settle before booking

Three points deserve to be handled in advance with your advisor.

First, mandatory fees. The hotel applies a daily amount per room, on top of which come Bahamian value added tax and a service charge. This is travellers' number one complaint: the final bill exceeds what they had in mind. In return those fees cover enhanced Wi-Fi, non-motorized water sports, round-the-clock gym access and beach amenities. Ask for the exact amount at 1 866 628-6241 before confirming and the surprise disappears.

Second, room category. The view names are accurate, with one exception: several guests report that the « garden » view actually faces service buildings or a utility yard. If the window matters to you, ask for an ocean view and have it noted on the file.

Third, age. Check-in requires twenty-one with government photo identification. Children are welcome accompanied by an adult, but the hotel runs no programming aimed at them.

The condition of the place

The score is good: 4.3 out of 5 across a little over nine hundred reviews, fourth among Nassau hotels. The volume stays modest because the listing restarted from zero after Hilton left.

Recurring complaints centre on air conditioning that struggles to cool some rooms, water pressure, a few plumbing and bathroom problems, and uneven housekeeping. Service varies from one employee to another. None of that cancels the quality of the building, but it is better known than discovered.

Who this address suits

It suits anyone who wants Nassau for Nassau: the history, the architecture, the downtown restaurants, the market, the excursions leaving from the port. It suits business travellers, couples who would rather walk than sit by a pool, and those who want to end the day on sand without taking a taxi.
