Athens Travel from Canada: The Complete Guide

Athens is one of the easiest European capitals to plan from Canada. Canadian citizens need no visa: Greece is part of the Schengen Area, which allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. In summer, Air Canada and Air Transat fly nonstop from Montreal in about 9 hours to 9 hours 15 minutes, and nonstop from Toronto in about 9 hours 35 minutes. The best travel windows are May-June and September-October, with temperatures of 22 to 30°C and thinner crowds. As a guideline, plan on $90 to $130 CAD per person per day on a budget and $200 to $280 CAD mid-range, excluding flights. Athens is 7 hours ahead of Eastern Time, and the currency is the euro (1 € is roughly $1.62 CAD as of July 2026). It is also the natural starting point for a trip to Greece that continues out to the islands.

Why Athens

Few cities move this quickly between the ancient and the everyday. The Acropolis rises over the city centre, and most major sites are within walking distance of one another; the multi-site combined ticket (covering the Ancient Agora, the Temple of Zeus and more) makes the circuit good value. Even the metro plays along: several stations display archaeological finds uncovered during construction, and Line 3 runs directly from the airport to the centre (Syntagma, Monastiraki) in about 40 minutes. The logistics are simple, which leaves more time for the city itself.

Athens also remains a reasonably priced capital. As a guideline, daily costs are generally gentler than in the big capitals of northern Europe: neighbourhood tavernas serve excellent food, and a quick gyros costs little. Another advantage is the long season. From November to March the weather is mild (10 to 15°C), the sites are nearly empty and prices drop, which makes Athens an excellent city destination even in winter.

Finally, Athens is the gateway to the Greek islands. From the port of Piraeus, ferries head to Aegina, Hydra and the Cyclades. Many travellers pair three or four days in the capital with one or two islands, and the formula works just as well for families as for couples.

When to go

If seeing the sites is your priority, aim for May-June or September-October. If you travel in July or August, plan visits for early morning, carry plenty of water and keep an air-conditioned plan B for the afternoon: the Government of Canada flags a risk of extreme heat and wildfires in Greece in summer, and local instructions should be followed.

Getting there from Canada

In summer, Air Canada and Air Transat operate seasonal nonstop flights to Athens (ATH) from both Montreal (YUL) and Toronto (YYZ). From Montreal, the nonstop takes about 9 hours to 9 hours 15 minutes, with up to roughly 14 weekly flights at the height of summer 2026. From Toronto, Air Canada flies once or twice daily in season and Air Transat also operates nonstops, at about 9 hours 35 minutes. Outside the summer schedule, itineraries connect through Toronto or a major European hub such as Paris-CDG, Frankfurt, Munich or Zurich.

On arrival, there is no need to book a transfer: metro Line 3 links the airport to Syntagma and Monastiraki stations, right in the centre, in about 40 minutes. Allow extra time at passport control: the European EES system records travellers' photo and fingerprints on entry.

Athens neighbourhoods and highlights

The Acropolis and its museum

This is the visit everything else is planned around. Book your tickets online with a timed entry slot: timed reservations are mandatory in high season, and the first morning slots are the most comfortable. The multi-site combined ticket, which includes the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Zeus among others, is good value if you plan to see several sites. In July and August, be aware that the Acropolis can close temporarily during the hottest hours of a heat wave, one more reason to arrive at opening time. Round out the visit at the Acropolis Museum, at the foot of the hill on the Koukaki side.

Plaka and Monastiraki

Plaka is the old village at the base of the Acropolis: sloping lanes, low houses, tavernas and small shops. It is touristy, but the late-afternoon atmosphere remains one of the simple pleasures of Athens. Next door, Monastiraki offers its flea market and rooftop terraces with a straight-on view of the Acropolis at sunset. One note of caution: pickpockets are active in the metro and in busy areas such as Monastiraki and Omonia, so keep valuables close.

Koukaki and the neighbourhoods where Athens lives

To see the Athens of Athenians, walk over to Koukaki, a residential district that has become one of the most sought-after in the city: cafés, small neighbourhood tables, and the Acropolis Museum within walking distance. It is an excellent place to stay, away from the crush yet minutes from the sites. In the evening, head to Psyrri, the going-out district, where bars, music and tavernas fill up late.

The Athens coast: the Riviera and Cape Sounion

It is easy to forget that Athens is a coastal city. South of the centre, the shoreline stretches into the seaside districts known as the Athens Riviera, ideal for a half-day break between visits. The classic excursion is Cape Sounion, about 70 km south of the city: a half-day trip to see the Temple of Poseidon at sunset, facing the Aegean Sea. It is one of the strongest images a stay in Athens can leave you with.

Piraeus and the ferries to the islands

Piraeus is the great port of Athens and the departure point for ferries to Aegina, Hydra and the Cyclades. In a single day, the classic "3 islands of the Saronic Gulf" excursion gives you a first taste of island Greece without changing hotels. To go further, Athens pairs naturally with a stay in Mykonos or Crete: a few days in the capital, then the sea. These ranges are provided as a guideline, excluding flights, based on prices observed in 2026 (1 € is roughly $1.62 CAD). Athens is generally more affordable than most Western European capitals, though summer high season pushes accommodation prices up. Payment cards are widely accepted; keep some cash on hand for neighbourhood tavernas and kiosks.

Entry requirements and health for Canadian citizens

• Passport: valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.
• Visa: none required; maximum stay of 90 days in any 180-day period, counting all Schengen countries.
• EES: the European Entry/Exit System is in effect. Nothing to do before departure: your photo and fingerprints are taken on arrival; allow extra time at the border.
• ETIAS: not yet required as of July 2026. Launch is planned for the last quarter of 2026; when the time comes, apply only through the official European Union website.
• Vaccines: routine vaccinations up to date; hepatitis B is recommended; yellow fever is not required.
• Travel insurance: comprehensive coverage (medical care, cancellation) is strongly recommended.
• Summer: risk of extreme heat and wildfires; follow instructions from local authorities.
• Official advice: check travel.gc.ca before departure. The current advisory level for Greece is "Take normal security precautions."

One last tip: book your Acropolis tickets and your ferries early if you travel in July or August, and build your days around the cooler hours. Athens is at its best in the morning and evening; the afternoon belongs to museums, shaded terraces and the coast.
